Houses of Prayer
While seeking the Lord for his direction in 2026, the Lord spoke to us during a leadership meeting, “Make it a House of Prayer and I will make it a House of Glory.” Out of our discussion on this, we felt the Lord calling all the families of our church to host their own Family Worship Night once a week. Parents are pastors (shepherds), for their children, and we feel by challenging parents to take this step of leadership in the home through the week, this will help build up our families and help our Households become Houses of Prayer! Here is a simple guide for parents to help them lead their own weekly Household of Prayer worship night:
- Set the day and time for the same night every week. For example, for most families, a night Tuesday-Thursday from 6-7pm will work best. Picking the same day/time will help you be consistent, set a routine, and schedule other events around. We suggest every family try to do Wednesday night from 7-8pm. If that does not work well for you, no worries. Just pick a different day and time that works best for your family.
- Cast the vision to your kids. Explain to them that our whole church is doing this, and it will be such a blessing to help set the culture of your home on the Lord and his priorities. Let them know the day/time and what day you will be starting to help them prepare, minimize complaining, and set expectations.
- Watch the video above for a simple format to follow. Here is a simple example but feel free to experiment and see what works best for your family:
- Read a Psalm to start (try Psalm 23, 24, 33, 34, 84, 91, 144, 145, etc.) and say a short prayer to set your family’s focus on the Lord as a call to worship.
- Preselect 1-2 of your favorite worship songs on YouTube on your TV. Play them and lead your family in 10-15 minutes of worship. If you have younger kids, pick shorter upbeat songs, clap, dance and have fun. Older kids can engage with more maturity in greater intimacy and intercession during this worship time.
- Read 1 chapter of the Bible. A simple plan is to pick a book from the New Testament and read one chapter each week. After reading it, lead your family in a simple discussion by asking questions like, “What is the main lesson of this chapter? What do you think God is saying to you today personally through this passage? How can we apply this or live this out as a family in a greater way?”
- PRAYER TIME. Have each person do a “popcorn” style, one sentence prayer over each of the following categories: The Nation, The Church, Other People (who need help/Jesus), Your own Family. So each person says one prayer for our nation, then each person says a prayer for our church, then other people, and finally your own family. Even larger families with 5 or more people can do this prayer time in about 5-7 minutes.
- Whoever is facilitating (mom/dad), say a short prayer to close your time together.
